Testing Out Blogger for Podcasts

A little over a month ago, I took the first steps to start up a podcast. I've used to host a few several years ago when I was an editor for MCPmag.com (MCP Radio focused on certification and then Redmond Radio was general Microsoft IT news). Back then, I used Audacity to record it, and Podbeans.com to host it.

Here I was back again, because podcasts are easy and free ways to create content on a site. This time, I took a similar route, but used soundcloud.com to host it, and use its sharing capabilities to add a widget to my Connection Strings blog.

One of the limits of the free soundcloud account is that they're limited to 3 hours, or 240 minutes. When I uploaded my sixth episode, guess what? I exceeded the upper threshold, so episode is currently disabled unless I "Go Pro."

Rather than spend my own money to increase the limit, I thought I'd look for an alternate solution, and a quick Google Search produced a few interesting results. One that intrigues me the digital inspiration blog https://www.labnol.org/internet/host-podcasts-on-google-drive/28227/, which shows a simple setup involving Google Drive, Blogger, and iTunes.

I'm using this page as a resource to set up the blog, and then seeing how far down the rabbit hole I can get. So far, I've created a folder on my free Google Drive -- it has 15GB available, with 280MB currently used for the 6 episodes I've created so far. I then added a publicly viewable folder called NetInsightPodcast and copied all six episodes there.

With this blog post, I'm currently at the point where I've created the blog page, .NET Insight Podcast, where I think I'll be providing a basic landing page for the blog. I'm hoping there's a way for me to link to some sort of widget or something from the Connection Strings blog, similar to how I have the soundcloud widget linked there. We'll see.

It's time to take the next step, but I'll post this blog and then publish another progress report if I get to the next step or get stuck. Let's see how this goes.
